Toothache That Won’t Quit

Pain that throbs, keeps you awake or flares with hot and cold usually means decay is getting close to the nerve, or the tooth has cracked. We find what’s causing it, get you comfortable, and explain your choices, whether that’s a filling, a root canal or taking the tooth out.

Until you see us

  1. Rinse with lukewarm water and floss gently around the sore tooth.
  2. Cool the cheek with an ice pack wrapped in a cloth, 15 minutes at a time.
  3. Use an over-the-counter pain reliever exactly as directed on the box.
  4. Don’t rest a pill against the gum; it can cause a chemical burn.
Call today: ER if swelling spreads

Swelling, Abscess or Gum Infection

A tender lump on the gum, a salty or bad taste, or a cheek that’s starting to puff up can all signal an infected tooth. This kind of infection doesn’t clear up by itself; a dentist needs to treat where it’s coming from.

Call About Swelling Request a Callback

Until you see us

  1. Gently swish warm salt water (about half a teaspoon per cup).
  2. Don’t press on, pop or lance the swelling.
  3. Keep heat off your face.
  4. A fever, or swelling spreading toward your eye or throat, means go to the ER right away.
Urgent: call right now

Tooth Knocked Out

From a fall on the sidewalk to a stray elbow at the rink, a knocked-out adult tooth can sometimes be saved, but only if it’s replanted quickly, ideally within the hour. Call as soon as it happens.

Call Now: Knocked-Out Tooth Get Help Now: After-Hours Options

Right now

  1. Hold the tooth by the white top, never the root.
  2. Dirty? Give it a brief rinse in milk or water, and don’t wipe it dry.
  3. Gently push it back into its socket and hold it there by biting on a clean cloth. Can’t? Store it in milk or between your cheek and gum.
  4. Don’t replant a baby tooth.
Call today if it hurts or feels sharp

Broken or Chipped Tooth

A minor chip may only need smoothing or bonding; a larger break might call for a filling or a crown. If the damage reaches the nerve, root canal therapy may save the tooth. We’ll explain what’s needed before we begin.

Call About a Broken Tooth Request a Callback

Until you see us

  1. Save the broken fragment in milk or a clean container.
  2. Gently rinse with warm water.
  3. Reduce swelling with a cold compress on the outside.
  4. Cover a sharp edge with dental wax or sugar-free gum.
Painful? Call today. If not, book this week

Lost Crown or Filling

Without its crown or filling, a tooth is more sensitive and more likely to break. We can often re-cement a crown that’s still in one piece, or replace the filling or crown if needed.

Call About a Lost Crown Request a Callback

Until you see us

  1. Put the crown somewhere safe and bring it with you.
  2. A pharmacy temporary-cement kit can keep it in place until your visit.
  3. Don’t use super glue or household adhesives.
  4. Avoid chewing on that side.
Call today: ER if bleeding continues

Sore Wisdom Tooth or Mouth Cut

Partly erupted wisdom teeth can trap food and get inflamed and swollen. Cuts to the lips, cheeks, gums or tongue may bleed heavily at first. We’ll check it and suggest what to do next.

Call About Wisdom Tooth Pain Request a Callback

Until you see us

  1. After eating, swish with warm salt water.
  2. Press a folded piece of clean gauze on any bleeding spot and keep steady pressure for 15 minutes.
  3. Hold a cold compress against your jaw.
  4. If bleeding continues despite pressure, go to the ER.

Can’t tell which one fits? Call 613-828-3129 and describe it. We’ll help you decide what to do next.

Emergency Dentist Nepean: Frequently Asked Questions

Very often, yes. Whitehaven Dental is just north of Nepean at 2280 Carling Ave, and we book same-day emergency visits whenever there’s room. The earlier you call 613-828-3129, the more likely we can see you today.

Walk-in emergency patients are seen when our schedule allows. Since we’re close by, a quick call first lets us give you a time to come straight over instead of waiting.

Call us immediately. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root, rinse it briefly in milk or water if it’s dirty, and try to slip it back into its socket. If that isn’t possible, keep it in milk or against your cheek and come in as fast as you can. Baby teeth should not be put back.

Drive north on Woodroffe Avenue to Carling Avenue. We’re near Carlingwood Mall, a kilometre or so up from Highway 417, with free parking. OC Transpo routes also run along Carling.

Yes. CDCP is accepted here, and we send claims directly to most private insurers, so many patients pay only what their plan doesn’t cover. We’ll check your coverage with you before treatment.

Choose the hospital, or call 911, when swelling is making it difficult to breathe or swallow, is moving up toward your eye or down your neck, or you have a high temperature with it. The same goes for bleeding that pressure can’t stop and possible jaw injuries. A dentist is the right call for toothaches, broken teeth and lost fillings.

We’re closed on weekends. The Ottawa Dental Society’s line at 613-523-4185 will point you to an on-call dentist any day between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. (fees apply). For round-the-clock nurse advice, dial 811 for Health811.
